Robert Farrar Capon (one of the most fun theologians and cookbook authors you'll ever read), enthuses at length about the "unnecessariness" of creation. He imagines the act of creation as an overflowing of God's love and delight, basically a party amongst the Trinity. He says, "Let us pause and drink to that...to a radically, perpetually unnecessary world...We are free: nothing is needful; everything is for joy"  (from The Supper of the Lamb: A Culinary Reflection).

God delights in creation...it is very good. We too find joy in God's creation and in the creative activity of humans who find ways big and small to add to the unnecessary beauty of the earth.

Cultivate Joy--Reflect or Journal

  • What brings me joy?

  • How can I engage my senses more as I seek to find joy in God's good creation?

  • In what ways (big or small) can I add to the unnecessary beauty of the earth and bring myself or others joy?
