ADULT MINISTRY

Westminster values and provides opportunities for the spiritual growth and education of all our members.

ADULT EDUCATION EVENTS:

New events coming in the fall.  In-person events will require social distancing and likely masks.  We hope to continue providing most education events online as well.

THIS SUMMER:

Relax and join us for Westminster Reads! Let's all read the same thing...apart...

together. This year's selection is The Brothers K by David James Duncan.

Do you like baseball, Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, & Yogi Berra? Do you remember Lucky Strike Cigarettes, Dentyne

chewing gum, MJB coffee or Cracker Jacks?  How about fishing and familiar landmarks in Oregon and Washington?

Then you will love this story of a working class family with 4 boys and twin girls growing up during the Eisenhower

years through the Vietnam era.  Both comedy and drama, the book has gotten rave reviews from Goodreads, Amazon, and others.

We discussed Books 1 and 2 on June 23 via Zoom (see the discussion prompts below). Our next virtual meeting will cover Books 3 and 4 (through page 378) on July 7 at 6 pm, and the final meeting will be on July 21 at 6 pm. If you'd like to get in on the discussion group contact krisha@salemwestpres.org.

Thought/Discussion Prompts for Books 1 and 2 (through page 182):

What was your initial reaction as you started and got into this book? General impressions?

Is there a particular character that you resonate with the most at this point? What about him/her did you connect with?

Do you have a favorite quote or passage to share?

What are the “God questions” that are being asked by the brothers in this book?

How do the mother and father influence their kids’ spirituality?

How would you describe the interplay of religion and spirituality so far in the book?

How would you describe the interplay of faith and doubt in the book?

Has the book changed or challenged your perspective on anything so far?

OVERVIEW OF ADULT EDUCATION EVENTS

SEPTEMBER—MAY:

We offer monthly or semi-monthly presentations called SOARs (Sunday Opportunities for Adult Renewal). These sessions take place on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM. They encompass a wide range of topics including biblical studies, church history, current issues, other religions, and missions. The presentations draw on expertise from Westminster members as well as guest speakers from the community.

OCTOBER:

FALL FRENZY kicks off the new school year for the adults in the congregation. It’s a 3-week Sunday evening event of small group studies or a larger educational session. This format allows for a more in-depth exploration of a topic, as well as more personal interaction with the material and other church members. See above for information on this year's events.

JANUARY:

THE SATURDAY EXPERIENCE is a half-day mini-retreat focusing on the importance of experiencing and practicing something to learn it well. This retreat generally offers a whole-person educational opportunity with an emphasis on Christian spirituality.

FEBRUARY/MARCH:

LENTEN EXPLOSION is the spring’s three-week version of Fall Frenzy, to bring us into the season of Lent.

BIBLE STUDIES:

Westminster offers several Bible Studies for our members. Click here for more information.
